Colin recently brought his trusty VW T6 Transporter, affectionately named Jeff, down to our Nottinghamshire HQ for a full Vanstyle experience, and he didn’t come for a simple tyre change.
Colin’s T6 was ready for a serious upgrade, so we lined up a dream combo:
The mission? Transform Jeff from a smart road-going camper into a head-turning, all-terrain machine.
Never one to miss a bit of fun, Colin joined Andy from the Vanstyle team for a wander through our warehouse and workshop. True to form, Colin brought his trademark humour, poking around the rows of styling accessories and sharing plenty of laughs while his T6 was on the ramp.
Think of it as a cross between Top Gear and DIY SOS, minus the shouting, and plus a lot more alloy wheels.
While Colin explored, off came Jeff’s original wheels and tyres. In went the Cobra Lift Kit and the new Tomahawk Yakama 17s.
The result? An instant transformation. Jeff now sits taller, prouder, and ready for adventures that go way beyond the tarmac.

Colin’s no stranger to a practical test. After the makeover, he took Jeff out for a spin to see how the new set-up performed. He compared before-and-after MPG figures and checked road noise levels, all while keeping that classic Yorkshire Pop Top commentary rolling. Spoiler: the van now looks incredible and still drives like a dream.
In true Yorkshire Pop Top style, the video doesn’t end in our workshop. Colin rolls straight into one of his trademark campsite tours, complete with a fireside Q&A. It’s the perfect wrap-up to a day of serious van styling.
Want to see Jeff’s transformation from start to finish, plus Colin’s honest verdict on the new set-up? Grab a brew and hit play on the video below:
Whether you’re eyeing up a set of Tomahawk Yakama Wheels & Tyres, a Cobra Lift Kit, or you simply love seeing great vans get even better, Colin’s latest adventure is well worth a watch.

Those using leisure or recreational vehicles such as a camper van or motorhome for touring holidays will always be on the lookout for additional space, be it for outdoor shelter from the sun or rain, or just an additional living area where they can relax without being in the confines of the vehicle. But, often there will be a need to drive somewhere, perhaps to tour the local area and to return to the site at the end of the day.

A solution to this is the driveaway awning. It’s essentially a self-supporting tent in two parts. The primary awning houses the additional space, and the connecting panel joins this to the vehicle, usually utilising something called a Kador strip which attaches to a rail affixed to the vehicle. When the vehicle is needed for a journey, this strip is disconnected, allowing the awning to remain in place and avoiding the need to pack the awning away, only to have to erect it again once the vehicle returns.
One type of driveaway awning is the inflatable driveaway awning which due to their simplicity are becoming increasingly popular. These use inflatable tubes instead of traditional poles and are considered to be quicker and easier to set up, with fewer bendable or breakable parts.
Awnings are offered in different shapes, sizes and styles, but the most important factor is the height. A motorhome driveaway awning will need to be much larger than a camper drive away awning.
For campervans, the affordable Maypole Broadway Poled Tailgate Awning attaches to the rear of the van and is suitable for vehicles fitted with a tailgate or twin ‘barn style’ doors. The structure comprises steel poles and fibreglass, and there are three large doors which include windows and curtains. It’s suitable for heights of between 180cm and 210cm (perfect for the likes of the Volkswagen Transporter or Ford Transit Custom) and it can be fitted in around 20 to 30 minutes.
Also suitable for campers based on the typical medium-sized van is the Maypole Warwick Air Driveaway Awning. This air awning drive away has a large ‘roll to the side’ front door, two large side window panels both of which have roll-down curtains, and the ground sheet is sewn in. As this is an inflatable driveaway awning poles are unnecessary and the awning comes complete with a handpump to allow for tool-free erection.
One of the leading manufacturers of driveaway awnings is Vango. Established in 1966 on the west coast of Scotland, the company, still based in the Highlands is very familiar with the weather conditions that leisure vehicle operators have to contend with when camping. The Vango Magra Air Shadow Drive Away Awning has been designed with the real-world user in mind. It has a front and rear entrance allowing it to be mounted on either side of a van with twin side doors, and consideration has been given to the user when exiting the awning in poor weather with an eyebrow-style canopy being mounted above the front door. An additional sweeping canopy at the rear provides a weather-protected space for socialising. The Magra Air Shadow has diamond-clear windows for excellent visibility and, to aid speedy erection, is inflatable. Weather protection is reassured with the awning conforming to European standards for rain and wind resistance.
If you need a larger driveaway awning, it’s worth considering the Vango Galli Pro Air Low Shadow Drive-Away Awning. Offering a footprint of over 5.5 meters x 3.2 metres, this inflatable driveaway awning can be fully erected in under 15 minutes using Vango’s AirBeam technology and it boasts skylight windows giving occupants plenty of daylight. Despite its large dimensions, the awning fits into a bag just 90cm x 38cm x 41cm when not in use, making storage simple.

Another reputable manufacturer of driveaway awnings is Kampa, well known for all types of tents and camping equipment. Its most affordable offering is the Kampa Trip Air Driveaway Awning. It’s an inflatable awning that takes between 10 and 20 minutes to erect (just connect the awning to your vehicle’s rail, inflate it, secure it to the ground, fit the groundsheet and guidelines and the job is done) and it measures 290cm x 205cm. It has large windows with integral blinds for privacy.
For those wanting something a little larger, the Kampa Touring Air Driveaway Awning is over 6 metres long with a width of 2.8 metres. It’s large enough to be used as a sleeping area for up to four people and, with this in mind, Kampa has included darkened fabric to reduce light entering the area during bright early mornings. There are zipped mesh panels which assist with ongoing ventilation or to quickly introduce fresh air after a hot day or a humid night. The fabric is a heavy-duty weatherproof type, helping to keep the elements at bay during the inclement weather that British summers are known for. As the Touring Air is of the inflatable type, it can be fully erected in less than 20 minutes with no poles required for what would be an otherwise time-consuming assembly.

Some of these awnings do require the purchase of a separate ‘driveaway kit’ which may need fitting to your vehicle to allow the awning to be connected when the vehicle is present.
A driveaway awning can transform your camping experience and with sizes and styles to suit the majority of budgets there is likely to be something for all requirements, from a modest extension to the vehicle, right up to a large awning big enough to accommodate guests for a social occasion. It pays to buy a quality item from a well known manufacturer such as Kampa, Maypole or Vango ensuring that the product is well designed, fit for purpose and that will provide many years of trouble free service.

The days when a van was used purely for the carriage of goods or provision of services are well and truly behind us. Now, many use a van for leisure whether it has been converted as a camper, or perhaps a dual-purpose double cab, a workhorse during the week and used for recreational purposes at the weekend.
Many will use the vehicle to transport bikes, but with space already at a premium, carrying them on the outside of the van is a must. With some cycles costing well into four figures, carrying them securely, without incurring damage and ensuring that the van stays legal without the lights or registration plate being obscured is vital.
There will be a temptation to scour the internet for cheap solutions but, why risk your investment in both your van and your bike with an unknown quantity? By the time you discover the flaws in the design or the lack of quality, it may be too late.
Thule, a company founded in Sweden in 1942 has led the way for many years in the design and supply of top quality bike racks. Some of these are generic but many are tailored to fit a specific vehicle such as a Volkswagen Transporter, the Thule cycle rack fitting perfectly.
A Thule bike rack can carry up to four cycles depending on your requirements and there is a comprehensive range, allowing for the cycles to be safely mounted on the rear of the van.

Offering an affordable solution to those wanting to carry up to two bikes, the Thule Velocompact 2 is lightweight and easily removable from the vehicle, allowing it to be folded and stowed away when not required. This Thule bicycle rack mounts to the rear of the van and, with its extendable wheel holders is ideal for securing longer wheelbases, such as those found on mountain bikes. It’s designed to fit onto vehicles that have a towbar and with a 13-pin connector and its own lights and number plate mounting area, you’re sure of staying legal at all times. Security is provided by the rack being locked to the vehicle, and the cycles to the rack. If you need additional capacity, there are Thule bike holders in this range designed to carry three or four cycles.
If you need a rack capable of carrying two cycles weighing up to 30kg each but one that will fold to a footprint of just 31cm x 63cm x 68cm, then the Thule Easyfold XT 2 bike carrier might be just what you are looking for. The rack is supplied pre-assembled, fits straight onto your towball and the integral lighting connects instantly to your existing towbar electric socket. This rack is designed to carry heavier mountain bikes and some e-bikes, and the simplicity, versatility and security offered make it an outstanding proposition for those who want a capable rack but with no fuss.
Not everyone has a towbar fitted to their vehicle so, the Thule Elite Van XT 2 bike carrier provides an ideal solution. The carrier is offered in a number of versions, tailored specifically for the likes of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Fiat Ducato and Volkswagen Crafter so that there are no compromises as with some other, more generic offerings. There’s no drilling required, the stylish black frame is mounted to the rear of the van using clamps and adhesive but the design allows the Thule bicycle holder to be removed for storage when not in use. Ensuring that a bike is secured to the rack is clearly vital so there may be a temptation to over-tighten fastenings which could cause damage to the cycle. This Thule bike rack comes with ActTight knob technology. These limit the amount of torque (or tightness) meaning that you are in no danger of damaging your investment. The rack is fully and easily adjustable and locks are provided to ensure the utmost security. Weighing just 9.5kgs the rack itself won’t significantly impact on the vehicle payload or its fuel consumption.
One of the most popular vans to be used for leisure purposes is the Volkswagen Transporter and so Thule has designed bespoke bike carrying solutions to fit the rear of the van. The Thule Wanderway is available in two, three or four cycle capacities, the bikes being stacked one behind the other. There is no need for a towbar, electrical connections or additional lighting as the vehicle lights and number plate remain unobscured. When not in use the platform folds up against the door, allowing for easy access to the loadspace or rear passenger area. Recognising that the additional weight of the Thule bike holder may be beyond the design capability of the standard hydraulic tailgate struts, kits are offered which include uprated struts which make opening and closing the door easier and without compromising the standard fitment.
The Transporter market is also about blending practical use with stylish good looks, and therefore, the Wanderway is available in either a silver or black finish. It’s also important to note that the Thule Wanderway can only be fitted to tailgate models and do not have a spoiler fitted.
Thule provides peace of mind to its customers with a 2-year guarantee provided on all Thule bike racks. Unlike competitors, the Thule warranty covers any defect or damage, even caused by normal wear and tear or natural discolouration of the materials. When shopping around, this is back-up that needs to be taken into account, especially when looking at generic, unbranded items from unknown suppliers.
Thule thoroughly tests its products prior to them being made available to ensure that they are robust and fit for purpose. At the test centre in Sweden, the racks are subjected to durability tests and exposed to heat sunlight, moisture and even chemicals, ensuring that the customer can use the product with confidence, providing him or her with years of trouble-free service.
If you’ve invested heavily in your vehicle and your bikes, it’s so important not to compromise on the equipment that connects the two. A Thule bike mount will ensure that your cycles are transported safely, legally and securely.

When planning your camper van setup, choosing the right power solution is one of the most important and potentially most expensive decisions you must make.
Two of the most popular options are portable power stations and traditional electrical systems, using either lead acid or lithium-based batteries. Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of each to help you decide which is best for your vanlife.
A portable power station is essentially a large battery with AC outlets, USB ports, and sometimes even 12V sockets and wireless charging pads, offering a plug-and-play solution for off-grid power.
Before we look at the pros and cons of traditional van power systems, lets quickly look at the benefits of solely using a power station versus a wired solution. This is topical for people with day vans or self-converters who are considering their power solution options.
When comparing power options for a camper van, one of the biggest advantages of portable power stations is their simplicity. Traditional van electrical systems involve installing and wiring multiple expensive components to create a fully functional setup. Here’s a quick look at what’s involved:

For a traditional van power system, you’ll likely need:
This setup is comprehensive but complex, requiring substantial knowledge or professional help. It’s a customised solution, but can add significant time, cost and maintenance to your build.
In contrast, a portable power station consolidates all these functions into a single, compact unit. With a built-in battery, inverter, and charging ports, these stations are a one-stop solution. You simply charge the station through a wall socket or solar panel, then plug your devices directly into the unit.
All-in-One Convenience: No separate components or wiring needed—just one box that houses the battery, inverter, and outlets.
Effortless Setup: Simply charge and go. The unit is ready out of the box, and there’s no need to modify your vehicle or install anything permanently.
Minimal Maintenance: A portable power station requires minimal upkeep compared to a traditional system. Once charged, it’s ready to power your devices without ongoing maintenance and checks.
For many van lifers, the simplicity of a portable power station is a big selling point. Rather than dealing with wiring, batteries, and inverters, you get the convenience of an all-in-one system that you can easily carry, use anywhere, and store when not in use. If your goal is to avoid a complex install, then a portable power station is the perfect, hassle-free solution.
Traditional electrical systems for camper vans are typically installed with a combination of leisure (lead acid) or lithium batteries, inverters, split chargers, and possibly solar panels, providing a more permanent and robust power solution.
Portable Power Stations are ideal for casual campers or people who don’t use much electricity. They’re a great option for shorter trips, light users, or if you value convenience and flexibility. They also compliment a traditional van installed power system as a source of power or back up power. The ability to use them inside and outside the van is a game changer.
Traditional Electrical Systems (in particular lithium battery systems) are better suited for full-time van lifers or people who rely on a steady and larger supply of power for appliances and extended off-grid living. Most vans with a leisure battery (lead acid) based install, only offer 12V power when not plugged into an electric hook up (EHU). If you use a 2200W Atom power station you can power the vans 240V sockets when off-grid and have backup portable power when you need it.
Choosing the right power solution depends on your specific needs, budget, and how you plan to use your camper van. Both options offer benefits, and you may even find a hybrid solution (such as a traditional system with a portable station for backup) works best for you. Contact us if you need any advice about your own specific van power requirements.
