TRANSIT CUSTOM MK2 2023-
LOWERING KITS
The new Transit Custom boasts
both front and rear spring and damper type suspension,
whereas the previous generation was equipped with rear
leaf spring type, limiting the options you had if you want
to swap to something lowering, higher, or generally
more performance based.
More options can
come with a host of decisions to make, and specifically
one when it comes to a working or conversion van –
“how low can you go?” The main consideration is that as
more weight is in the van, it’ll sit lower. With a lowering
spring kit fitted, it’ll sit far lower than standard, is this
okay with your van and the driving conditions it will be
used in?
It’s fair to say that the latest
generation of Transit Custom comes on stilts as
standard, so we know that lowering springs are a hot
seller to get a more normal look, this does mean that
even an extreme lowering kit will still look and react as
you’d want your van to.
A good idea when it
comes to suspension and components is to stick with
high quality brands, ensuring you’re going buying
something to last, but most importantly a safe option
too. Cobra use a specifically designed high tensile
chromium silicone wire, giving great results every time.
The process they use when manufacturing includes heat
treating and phosphate treatment, which increase the
life expectancy and increase corrosion resistance.
With the options from Cobra coming as low, and
very low, the choice is yours.
When the first
batch came through from Cobra, we fitted a set of the
“low” springs which lowers the van by 25mm on the
front and 50 at the rear. It might sound a lot but it
looked far better as the van sat pretty high from factory,
helping the wheels fill the arch gaps much better and
generally gave the Custom a bit more attitude.
After seeing the van lowered by what most would
consider to be a good amount, we looked at the more
extreme set, and couldn’t help but get them fitted to
see how low it truly was, it would be rude not to,
wouldn’t it?
A more aggressive 40mm front
and 65mm rear reduction in height looked better again.
Looking like it’s on the floor, but still with a good
amount of ride height available to endure speed bumps
and dropped curbs without wincing, the extreme set of
lowering spring complimented our 20 inch alloys wheel
brilliantly without sacrificing your comfort.
FAQ:
Q: Will an extreme lowering kit be
fine for daily use?
A: It’s down to the wheel setup
you have, and the weights you’re likely to be carrying,
even suspension component wear can effect how your
van will feel.
Q: Why are there two different
heights of lowering springs from front to rear?
A:
As the cargo weight in a van sits at the rear of the
vehicle, it needs a different suspension set up, hence
the need for lowering springs to work alongside this for
a levelled look.
Q: Do I need to replace my
shock absorbers if I fit lowering springs?
A: Cobra
design their springs to work alongside factory dampers,
if yours are worn then we’d recommend changing them,
if not they you’re good to go!
